Kildare’s Under-16A squad have an All-Ireland Championship final appearance to look forward to, following last evening’s surprise win over Cork in Fethard.

Cork, having conceded a penalty from which Anna Dillon scored Kildare’s first goal, led 2-8 to 1-6 at half-time.

The heat of the evening and its impact on the game was negated a little by a water-break in each half.

Kildare, aided by a second goal from Dillon had squeezed into a 2-10 to 2-9 lead by that water-break and we had a thrilling finish to the encounter.

After Cork had reduced Kildare’s advantage to a single point Catherine Murphy and Grace Byrne gave the Kildare girls a three-point lead.

Cork now needed a goal, but even that would not be enough after Amy Wall brought Kildare’s tally to 2-14.

That point was needed as Cork, not giving up, secured a goal from the foot of Kate O’Connell to leave one between the teams.

Thankfully, from a Kildare perspective, it was to be the last score of the game, and victory went to the deserving Lilywhites.

They will play Cavan in the final, which is scheduled to be played on Wednesday, 15th July next, at a neutral venue.

The Ulster champions, playing in similar hot and humid conditions as Kildare did, defeated Galway impressively last night in Orchard Park, Elphin, winning 2-16 to 2-9.
